Remembering Our Dear Friend Barb Neilson

HEA mourns the passing of Barbara Neilson, MSW, on January 2, 2020. A social worker who worked with urology patients and their families at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Barb was a speaker and moderator at HEA conferences for many years. Barb was a kind and cheerful person who donated her time and expertise with great generosity, sometimes even skipping Canadian Thanksgiving with her family to attend an HEA conference. In addition to an encyclopedic knowledge of the issues faced by children with conditions such as hypospadias, epispadias, bladder exstrophy, and differences of sex development, she had great empathy and compassion for these children, their parents and siblings, and adults with these conditions. Her warm smile, easygoing manner, and sly sense of humor helped to break the ice at our conferences and make attendees feel comfortable. While Barb is sadly no longer with us, her legacy will live on in our hearts and memories and with the many social workers she trained during her long and successful career.

We offer our deepest sympathies and condolences to Barb’s husband, Lionel; her son, Aaron; and the rest of the Neilson-Belman family.
